Wartburg Adult Care Community history
Wartburg Adult Care Community company history timeline
Founded in 1886 by Lutherans in the New York region to take care of orphans, the Wartburg Orphans Farm School was opened on a tract of 121 acres that the Lutherans bought in Mount Vernon.
In 1899, the Wartburg entered the field of care to the elderly with the completion of the Heins Memorial Home, becoming one of the first institutions of its kind to provide indoor plumbing and private rooms for its residents.
In 1950, two sizeable wings were added to the Home in order to meet the growing demand for rooms.
By 1969, Wartburg was the first institution in Westchester County providing three levels of care for the aging – independent living, intermediate care and a nursing home.
The care and education of orphans continued until the early 1980's when the trend toward providing foster care in private homes reduced the need, Doctor Gatz said.
