Waynesboro, VA company history timeline

1801

Established on 8 January 1801.

1834

After this, it would only take a few short years before Virginia recognized this area as legitimate, although it took until 1834 for Waynesboro to be officially incorporated.

1861

During the American Civil War, Confederate General Thomas J. (“Stonewall”) Jackson won renown in 1861–63 for his actions during the Shenandoah Valley campaigns.

1865

On March 2, 1865, the Battle of Waynesboro ended the Civil War and allowed the town to be handed over to General Philip Sheridan.

1889

Basic City (charted 1889), named for the “basic” steel manufacturing process, developed as an industrial site at the eastern edge of Waynesboro.

1923

The two communities were united in 1923 as Waynesboro-Basic; the name Basic was dropped the following year.

1941

He graduated from Bridgewater College in 1941 and married Maxine McClung the next year.

1947

Incorporated as a city on 31 December 1947.

1948

Since their joint venture, Waynesboro has continued to grow—slowly accumulating land from Augusta County and finally declaring independence in 1948.

1958

Three McClung employees were certified as Master Craftsmen on March 21, 1958.

1964

Her husband Edmond began working at McClung in about 1964 when he was only 20 years old.

1971

Charles ran the business for 25 years and, after his death in 1971, his wife Lucille became the President and CEO. Besides leading McClung, Charles was involved in the community, serving as mayor of Waynesboro and President of the Printing Association of Virginia.

1984

In 1984 Tom Trevillian purchased the company and changed the name to McClung Printing, Inc.

1986

Robert Vincent worked at McClung for 29 years, starting in October 1986.

1993

1996

With a bit of a struggle McClung finally got its hands on Dirty Sam’s and tore it down in 1996-97.

2001

McClung Companies sponsored a softball team for several years starting in 2001 in the Waynesboro Parks and Rec League.

2004

In 2004 McClung bought Color Graphics, a printer in Harrisonburg, and expanded its footprint in the Shenandoah Valley.

2005

The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, which opened in 2005, highlights the region’s art, culture, and history.

In 2005 McClung began offering full-featured, customizable Web-to-Print Internet stores.

2006

The Kodak NexPress 2100 digital press arrived at McClung in 2006.

2007

Once again McClung needed more room, and in 2007 the company built a new 10,000 sq. foot pressroom.

2010

In 2010 Immerge Technologies, a web development company, joined the McClung family.

2011

One of the last remaining things that Tom did while President and CEO of McClung was to bring Select Group, a printer from Salem, Va., into the McClung family in late 2011.

2012

In 2012, when Woody retired from McClung the second time, he was honored with a luncheon.
