1820

The publicly funded firefighting apparatus and equipment was housed in station houses, squares and markets throughout the City to provide quick access.In 1820 Savannah experienced its second devastating fire.

1821

Fire safety became an even greater priority.African-Americans & ProfessionalizationIn 1821, the year after the great fire, free men of color joined in Savannah’s volunteer firefighting force, forming Franklin Fire Engine and Hose, and the Union Axe and Fire companies.

1822

In 1822 Joseph Bailly located on the Calumet river, at the place later known as Bailly Town.

1826

Savannah Fire Rescue was granting unprecedented freedom and opportunity for enslaved black men 38 years prior to the Emancipation Proclamation.In 1826 officials decided there weren’t enough volunteer firefighters to meet the City’s growing fire safety needs.

1827

The first death in the township was a son of Joseph Bailey in 1827, and the first marriage was that of Esther Bailey to Col.

1833

Bailly and his frontier post will be found in Chapter III. In 1833 Jesse Morgan came with his family and settled in what is now Westchester.

1834

His daughter Hannah, born in February, 1834, was the first white child born in the township.

1835

In 1835 William Thomas, Sr., William Gosset, Jacob Beck, John Hageman, John Foster, William Frame and Pressley Warnick brought their families and located in Westchester.

The first attempt to establish a town was in the spring of 1835, when John Foster, who was a surveyor, laid out the town of Waverly on land belonging to William Gosset about two miles northwest of the present town of Chesterton.

1836

WESTCHESTER TOWNSHIP When the board of county commissioners issued the order of April 12, 1836, dividing the county into ten civil townships, the territory now comprising Westchester was included in the townships of Lake, Liberty and Waverly.

1852

The first house in the present town of Chesterton was erected by Luther French in 1852 and was used for a hotel under the name of the Sieger House.

1853

Morgan built the first house there in 1853.

1854

The City’s fire losses plummeted.Firefighting during the Civil WarBy 1854 a central fire station at the corner of Oglethorpe and Abercorn was built.

1855

The Northern Indiana House was built by Leroy Brown about 1855, and kept as a hotel by him for several years.

1857

On September 14, 1857, the paid fire department started operations with H. Clay Sexton as the fire chief.

1861

Furnessville, in the northeastern part, takes its name from Edwin L. Furness, who was appointed postmaster when the postoffice was established there in 1861.

1872

On October 2nd 1872, interested citizens formed Golden Hook and Ladder Company.

In 1872 the Big Duke fire bell, named after City Council Fire Committee Member Marmaduke Hamilton, was purchased.

1873

By October 1873 the Rescue Hook and Ladder Company purchased a used hook and ladder truck for $150 out of their own pockets.

1874

The first brick building was erected by Young & Wolf in 1874.

By 1874, the Excelsiors purchased a used engine known as the “Fire King” from the City of Omaha, Nebraska.

1877

By 1877, the two fire companies reorganized.

1885

Housed in the historic 1885 Brown Mansion, the Westchester Township History Museum offers a variety of activities and research opportunities for local residents, area visitors, and researchers.

1899

On March 31, 1899, a petition was filed with the board of county commissioners asking for the incorporation of Chesterton.

1906

1907

A petition was first filed with the county commissioners on August 7, 1907, but when it came for hearing on September 2nd, a number of citizens appeared and asked for the exclusion of certain territory.

1908

The present town of Porter was incorporated early in the year 1908, with a population of about 500.

1910

Porter has one Congregational and three Lutheran churches, a commercial club, a large department store and several other mercantile establishments, and in 1910 reported a population of 524.

Officially, Ed Mosbough became the first paid full-time Fire Chief in 1910.

Through the years the fire department continued to grow and by 1910 they had 51 horse-drawn steam engine companies, 17 hook and ladder companies, 11 district chiefs, a deputy chief, master mechanic, and a fire chief.

1911

In the year 1911-12 there were twenty three teachers employed in the public schools of the township and the incorporated towns of Chesterton and Porter.

Then in 1911 the City ordered 13 motorized chemical wagons to replace all of the department’s horse drawn apparatus, making the Savannah Fire Department the nation’s first fully-mechanized fire department.

1914

In 1914, a 6 cylinder air cooled Seagraves chemical and hose wagon was purchased.

1917

Fire protection for the Town of Chandler began in 1917 when the Chamber of Commerce organized a fire company consisting of 18 volunteers.

1921

On May 16, 1921, history was made when Paul S. Farbush, Lorenzo Graham, Thomas S. Hill, Claude Johnston, Henry Porter, Frank Slaughter, and Walter Hill, along with Pearl Bishop (who was hired a day later) became the first African-American men hired to work for the St Louis Fire Department.

1923

In 1923, the department’s first pumper was purchased at the price of $13,000.

1926

Beginning on July 16, 1926, the St Louis Fire Department training school was organized under the leadership of battalion chief George R. Ward.

1928

He served in this office until November 1928 when Perrin G. Trowbridge was made Fire Chief.

1931

On April 22 1931, the department purchased a city service ladder truck on a Mack chassis.

1936

The first piece of mechanized fire apparatus used by the Chandler Fire Department (CFD) was a 1936 Dodge pumper.

1937

Three years later in 1937, the county bought Draughon's operation for $5,500 and created the DeKalb Fire Department.

1941

In 1941, the department bought its first brand new engine - a Pirsch pumper.

Phil Nauman was also one of the founders of the Box 8 Club which was organized in 1941.

1942

The first five-alarm blaze occurred on December 11, 1942 at the Dye Candy Company located at 310 S 21st St

1947

In 1947, County Commissioner Scott Candler created the Brookhaven Fire Tax District.

1953

In 1953 the first paid fire chief and captains were hired.

1956

George began to discuss the concept of a new fire department in 1956.

1957

The Brooklyn Park Fire Department was officially chartered in April 1957.

1960

The city opened its first ranch style fire station on June 17, 1960 at 5600 Prescott Avenue, for Engine Company No.

1964

In 1964, Station 1 was moved to it's current location, Station 2, the old airport Station 3, and the old north side Station 4 were built.

1969

In 1969, the organization was officially reorganized as a paid fire department with a volunteer standby system.

1971

The City Ambulance Service (as it was then called) began its first series of two-man procedures in September 1971.

1977

Established in 1977, this not-for-profit organization is located in a restored country barn on 69 acres.

1978

Station 5 was built in 1978 with the intention of being temporary and to be replaced by 2 new stations 5 years later.

Station #7 was the first expansion station since 1978.

1980

In the 1980's changes started to take place with the first women firefighters to join the fire department, and a new headquarters building was opened at Jefferson and Cass.

1988

On August 22, 1988, the City adopted Ordinance No.

1991

The Savannah Fire Department hired its first female firefighter, Kim Susenbach, in 1991.

1996

The position was temporarily filled until 1996, when the first career fire chief was hired.

1997

On April 19, 1997 EMS was incorporated into the St Louis Fire Department, and renamed the Bureau of EMS.

1999

In 1999, Fire Station #6 was built at 900 Hollywood St and was staffed by manpower from the airport fire station.

2004

In May of 2004, Fire Station #7 was opened at 835 N Rupple Road to serve the western part of the city.

2007

Fire Station #5 opened in 2007 and is located at 2979 N Crossover which is 2 miles north of the original station.

2017

The old location is currently being used as the Fire Prevention office after it was remodeled in 2017.

2018

With over twenty-one years’ experience in public safety, Chief Cunningham joined the Brooklyn Park team in June 2018.

2019

The 2019 Bond, which was approved by voters in April 2019, includes 3 Fire Stations.

2021

Beginning January 1, 2021, this law requires local government agencies to post campaign statements and reports on their agency’s website, within 72 hours of each applicable filing deadline, if they are filed in paper format.
