1986

The restructuring continued in 1986 when Williams sold all of Williams Exploration's assets to the United States subsidiaries of two Belgian oil companies, Petrofina and Cometra Oil.

1987

The reorganization ended in 1987, when the company sold its stake in Peabody Coal to consortium partner Newmont Mining for $320 million and divested Agrico by selling it to Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners for $350 million.

In 1987 Williams acquired LDX NET, Inc., which owned a 1,295-mile-long fiber-optic network.

1989

Hunton & Williams became an international law firm with the opening of a Brussels office in 1989, and by the end of that decade, had grown to more than 350 lawyers in seven offices.

In 1989 WilTel became the fourth largest fiber-optic telecommunications company in the United States when it acquired another fiber-optics concern, LIGHTNET, and added 4,500 miles to its system.

1990

The National Law Journal reported that 44 percent of the United States' largest law firms in 1990 reported having fewer lawyers, an unprecedented decline during the publication's 14-year history.

The firm in 1990 expanded to have 129 lawyers, which for the first time earned it a ranking as number 250 on the National Law Journal's annual survey.

In 1990, Minneapolis based Dayton Hudson Corporation contracted with Williams Company to build its first Target Store on East Colonial Drive in Orlando.

1991

In 1991 Williams completed the project.

1992

In 1992 Williams & Connolly defended boxer Mike Tyson, but an Indiana judge rejected defense pleas for understanding and leniency.

1994

Following the 1994 Republican victory that gave the GOP control of Congress, lobbying firms such as Hunton & Williams gained more clout.

In 1994 Joseph Williams retired and Keith Bailey was named chairman.

1994: Williams sells its subsidiary WilTel for $2.5 billion.

1995

Also in 1995, Williams acquired ICG Wireless Services, which gave a boost to WilTech by allowing it to connect satellite transmission of video with its fiber-optic network.

Williams used the cash from the WilTel deal to purchase Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corp. (Transco) in 1995.

1996

The move quickly paid off: In 1996, WilTech won a multimillion contract from Time Warner to interconnect its cable and broadcasting companies.

1997

The firm in 1997 ranked as number 198 with 166 lawyers.

1998

Amidst stiff competition and rapid expansion of law firms around the country, its ranking slipped slightly, to 32nd, based on increased 1998 revenues of $244 million.

With the purchase of MAPCO in 1998, Williams also entered the refining business and the convenience store market.

1999

In October 1999, Williams sent its Communications Group public, offering 29.6 million shares over the New York Stock Exchange.

The North Carolina Pork Council in 1999 hired Hunton & Williams to defend it in a national controversy concerning the growing number of factory hog farms.

In 1999 the firm opened a small London office that focused mainly on project finance and securities work, particularly in eastern Europe.

According to the American Lawyer, Williams & Connolly ranked number 70 based on its profits per partner of $645,000 in 2000. Its revenue increased 7.2 percent from 1999.

2000

High profile corporate representation continued; on June 25, 2000, Philip Morris Companies Inc., represented by Hunton & Williams and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, announced an agreement to acquire all outstanding shares of Nabisco Holdings Corporation.

The American Lawyer ranked Williams & Connolly, with $126.0 million in gross revenue, as the nation's 117th largest law firm in 2000.

2001

Also in 2001, Pacifica radio hired Williams & Connolly to defend itself against three lawsuits filed by former employees and listeners.

The National Law Journal ranked the firm as number 195 in 2001 based on its 199 lawyers, which was up from 187 lawyers the previous year.

2002

In 2002 the law firm did not have any branch offices or a web site, both common practices at most of the nation's largest law firms.

2018

In 2018, Hunton & Williams and Andrews Kurth Kenyon merged to become Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP. The combined firm now consists of nearly 900 lawyers with offices in 14 US and five international cities.

2022
