1861

Richard Clothier, Managing Director of Wyke Farms, is a third-generation cheesemaker and guardian of the secret recipe – created by his grandmother Ivy’s family back in 1861 – to which the family business owes its success.

Richard’s family have been farming in Somerset, south-west England, for over 150 years and their world-class secret recipe was originally written down by their grandmother Ivy’s family in 1861. “The heritage and the tradition are a really important part of the Wyke Farms cheddar brand.

1906

1906: Tom Clothier is born in the cheese room in the farmhouse at Wyke Champflower.

1911

His sister Emma is still listed as the cheesemaker here in the 1911 Census.

1939

1939: The demand for Ivy’s cheddar increases as she begins supplying local shops and delis.

1952

She won many awards for her cheese, the first being in 1952.

1994

1994: Tom Clothier buys the company’s first pre-packing machine.

2008

2008: Wyke Farms brand now sold in 160 countries across the world.

2012

After securing planning for a green biogas plant in 2012, Richard went to Barclays seeking help with a loan.

2020

Wyke Farms, the UK’s largest independent cheese producer and producer of renewable energy, has filed accounts for financial year ending March 2020 showing a turnover of £107 million; its highest turnover to date.
