Yonkers Recreation Center company history timeline

1852

He began working at the age of 16 for his relatives at Boorman, Johnson and Company, and in 1852 Colgate took the initiative to form a stock-brokerage partnership with John B. Trevor.

1867

Though not much is known of John Cloes, his descendent Odell Close changed the spelling of the family name for political purposes, subsequently serving as a delegate to Albany from 1867-73.

1890

In 1890, Colgate successfully persuaded the Board of Trustees to rename the school for his father, and today it is called Colgate University.

1911

In 1911, the street’s name was changed to Colgate Avenue.

1930

Nepperhan Community Center (NCC) was founded by a group of concerned neighbors in the Nepperhan section of Yonkers (now Ru nyon Heights) in the late 1930’s.

1938

Nepperhan community center has grown from a small room serving local Yonkers residents in 1938, to today serving the lower Hudson Valley region in New York State, two countries – Accra Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire – the Ivory Coast – on the continent of Africa and Haiti.

1997

On May 9, 1997, City Councilman Federico Perez and Commissioner Stern named the property Colgate Close Park.
