Youth Action Partnership was founded in 1998 by Joseph Williams, who was looking for a way to engage local youth and focus on activities youth find interesting.
In 2003, he decided to formalize his work with YAP and apply for a 501(c)3.
Founded by young alumni of the Tavis Smiley Foundation in 2003, Youth Action is a youth-led Philadelphia community development organization operated solely by high school and college students that works to empower young African Americans to become socially, economically, and civically aware.
Over lunch, in 2005, Tremaine shared her ideas for launching a youth development program with Joseph and the two decided to team up.
In 2019, Joseph removed himself from the daily YAP operations to serve as Chairman of the Board.
