The Department of Psychology and the Department of Health Sciences at Gettysburg College invite applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Health Psychology beginning August 2026. The teaching load for this position is the equivalent of six courses over the academic year. Teaching responsibilities will include Introductory Psychology, a 200-level course in Health Psychology, a 200-level course in Statistics, an upper-level course on Health Equity, and an upper-level psychology laboratory course in the candidate's research area. Candidates will also have access to their own laboratory space and the opportunity to work directly with undergraduate students as research assistants and independent study students. Visiting faculty are eligible to apply for competitive research support fund offered by the college.
Qualifications: Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or be ABD) in the area of Health Psychology, Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology or related discipline. Previous teaching experience at the undergraduate level is preferred. The position does not require an active research program; however, preference will be given to candidates whose research experience enables them to effectively teach an upper-level psychology laboratory course in their area of expertise.

Together, these courses cover all levels of reading and writing skills for students as well as researching and using information. The Department Head, Course Coordinators, and ENGL Program Manager will review applicants for these positions when a need arises.
Successful candidates will be provided with accessible and comprehensive teaching materials, join a collaborative department that values teamwork and that provides extensive support, professional development, and opportunities for advancement.
Here is a breakdown of courses:
ENGL 121 College Composition: this transfer-level writing course teaches students to develop and apply rhetorical knowledge for creating effective text-based communication. Students develop critical inquiry and multi-stage writing processes in order to contribute productively, effectively, and ethically to the social and collaborative practices of academic and other discourses.
ENGL 021: Academic Reading and Writing: At HCC, developmental writers are placed directly into ENGL 121: College Composition, though they are also enrolled in ENGL: 021, a course designed to support their success. This course, which is closely aligned with the College Composition curriculum, employs an integrated reading and writing approach to help students develop confidence and proficiency in the areas of academic reading, research, and writing. The course also addresses common barriers to student success. These sections are paired with individual ENGL 121 sections taught by the same instructor; applicants with experience in either or both College Composition and Developmental Writing are encouraged to apply, and curricular support will be provided.
INFO 100: teaches students a core of information literacy and critical thinking skills that will transfer to other coursework and will help them to reach academic and professional goals. Students will learn and refine strategies for college success and will strengthen their capacity for effective academic and professional communication and use of information resources.
Literature: these courses include American Literature, African American Literature, Asian American Literature, Latin American Literature, Middle Eastern Literature, Ethics of Literature, Literature by and about Women, Literature in Film, Children's Literature, Poetry, World Literature, The Short Story, and others.
Adjunct faculty may teach 1-3 courses each semester, depending on schedule and availability. In the English Department at HCC, adjunct faculty are considered part of the campus community: they are paired with experienced mentors, supported with curricular materials, invited to participate in professional development (including Faculty and Professional Learning Communities), and there may be opportunities to engage in certain faculty teams or special projects. There may be added opportunities to work as an embedded tutor and/or tutor students in our tutoring center.
Essential Role Responsibilities
This position requires computer and internet access. Teach 30 semester hours of courses per academic year related to General Psychology and other psychology courses as appropriate (e.g., Human Growth and Development, Child Psychology, Adolescent Psychology, Introduction to Psychopathology, Educational Psychology, and The Psychology of Learning);
Teach a varied schedule of courses that may include day, night, early morning, weekend, online, off campus, dual enrollment, and/or accelerated sections. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer and winter classes;
Serve on or lead department, discipline, campus, or college-wide committees; participate in psychology coordination at the campus; and mentor part-time faculty;
Participate in discipline assessment activities, including assessment design, data collection, and report writing;
Apply culturally relevant and empathic pedagogies to the teaching and learning process;
Engage students in their learning through active collaborative learning approaches;
Engage in student outreach events to increase visibility of the psychology program and to improve the learning outcomes of students taking psychology classes;

Communicate with psychology faculty on other campuses to ensure a consistent student learning experience;

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biological Sciences from an accredited college or university.
Experience with some techniques in microbiology, botany, and/or human physiology (i.e. microscopy, gram staining, bacterial cultures, EKG, and dissections).
Ability to communicate and work with a diverse population of students both in and outside the classroom.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Prior college or university laboratory teaching experience preferred.
Knowledge of, and commitment to, the university's philosophy and mission.

The Department of Psychology at Gettysburg College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Human Cognition beginning August 2026. The teaching load for this position is the equivalent of six courses over the academic year. Teaching responsibilities will include Introductory Psychology, a 200-level course in Human Cognition, Experimental Research Methods, and an upper-level laboratory course in the candidate's research area. Candidates will also have access to their own laboratory space and the opportunity to work directly with undergraduate students as research assistants and independent study students.
Qualifications: Candidates should have a PhD (or be ABD) in the area of Human Cognition. Previous teaching experience at the undergraduate level is preferred. The position does not require an active research program; however, preference will be given to candidates whose research experience enables them to effectively teach an upper-level laboratory course in their area of expertise.
