2002

In 2002, Matt Mullenweg was an active blogger.

While Michel Valdrighi worked throughout 2002 on the project, it was abandoned leaving users with concern over the future of the project.

2004

WordPress 1.0 was released in January 2004: otherwise known as the ‘Davis’ version.

Then 2015 saw a big change: REST Application Programming Interfaces (API) infrastructure was added to the WordPress core.

By 2015, its frequent use caught Automattic’s attention, and the company acquired this popular plugin.

2017

A long-time WordPress user, Megan has wielded a red pen (and keyboard) at DreamHost since 2017.

2018

As of 2018, there are 784 WordCamps in 69 cities across 65 countries (Source: About WordCamp). The annual meeting in San Francisco is the main event, where Matt Mullenweg gives his annual update called State of the Word.

2019

In 2019, the Twenty Twenty theme was released and included a unique feature: It was designed for compatibility with the Block Editor.

2020

Four years later, in 2020, updates were made automatic for plugins, helping to keep sites secure and plugins operational.
