If you’re hoping to earn some extra cash wearing a red suit and “ho ho ho’ing” or snag a seasonal cashier gig, Covid might complicate your plans this year.

Due to health concerns, laws and ordinances, and general social distancing, people are approaching the holidays differently this year. Many large, rambunctious company holiday parties aren’t taking place, online shopping is dominating, and Santa is now on Zoom.

For the workers who once served those parties, rung up masses of holiday shoppers, and donned the Santa beard, what does this mean?

To better understand how Covid impacted the seasonal job market, we analyzed millions of job listings.

You can see our in-depth findings and a more detailed methodology below:

Most Common Seasonal Jobs

We found over 1,519,011 seasonal jobs. 584,914- or 39%- of those job listings were job openings for just 10 jobs. Despite Covid the vast majority of these jobs are still in retail and other traditional seasonal employers.

You can see a list of the top 10 most common seasonal jobs below:

Jobs With The Highest Number Of Seasonal Jobs

  1. Customer Service Associate
  2. Sales Associate
  3. Delivery Driver
  4. Assistant Manager Of Operations
  5. Certified Public Accountant
  6. Shift Leader
  7. Seasonal Associate
  8. Cab Driver
  9. Cashier
  10. Helper/Driver

Interestingly, while the top jobs in sheer volume were to be expected, many of these jobs offered just as many long-term opportunities as seasonal.

The results? Some jobs have a disproportionately high amount of seasonal jobs compared to all jobs available.

How We Determined This

We found over 1,519,011 seasonal jobs, after scraping over 46 million total jobs from our job postings. Any job using the term “seasonal” was classified as a seasonal job.

From there we simply summed the total number of seasonal jobs per job total- and the total number of jobs that were not.

The greater the number of seasonal job postings per job title, the more common the job.

What This Means For Workers

Ultimately, the greatest volume of seasonal jobs still lies in the powerhouse of winter jobs- retail.

However, many retail jobs are offering as many, and often more, permanent jobs than the seasonal listings. For the high number of unemployed, this could be good news and an opportunity to snag a job that won’t leave them unemployed in the new year.

However, the bulk of these positions (with a few specialized exceptions such as CPA) are lower paying than the national average income.

Middle-class workers forced to take on these roles might find them insufficient to cover their living expenses.
