Measuring Stress in Hawaii: Our Methodology

To assess stress levels across Hawaii, we utilized six key indicators that reflect common stressors affecting residents. Our analysis encompassed 96 locations in Hawaii with populations exceeding 2,000 based on the latest census data:

  1. Percentage of the population with long commutes (over 30 minutes)
  2. Unemployment rate
  3. Average hours worked per week
  4. Population density
  5. Percentage of income allocated to rent
  6. Percentage of uninsured residents

Higher values in these categories correlate with increased stress levels.

Data was sourced from the most recent U.S. Census Bureau statistics. Each location was ranked from 1 to 96 based on these criteria, with the average rank determining the overall Stress Score—where a lower score indicates higher stress.

Below, we break down the stress statistics for each of the top 10 most stressed locations, along with a detailed ranking of all 96 locations analyzed.
