Allegheny College company history timeline

1815

The city is the seat of Allegheny College (1815). Conneaut Lake, the state’s largest natural lake, is 10 miles (16 km) west, and the Erie National Wildlife Refuge is 10 miles east.

1816

The first class, consisting of four male students, began their studies on July 4, 1816, without any formal academic buildings.

1824

In 1824, Thomas Jefferson wrote to Alden, expressing the hope that his University of Virginia could someday possess the richness of Allegheny's library.

1831

Alden served as president of the college until 1831, when financial and enrollment difficulties forced his resignation.

1833

The college is historically affiliated with the United Methodist Church beginning in 1833, but does not integrate religion into the classroom or pedagogy.

United States President William McKinley was a student at Allegheny before leaving to fight in the American Civil War, and journalist Ida M. Tarbell graduated from the college in 1880. It reopened in 1833 with the support of the Methodist church.

1853

Ruter Hall was built in 1853.

1870

Women were first admitted in 1870.

1905

In 1905, Allegheny built Alden Hall as a new and improved preparatory school.

1908

Cochran Hall, now the Alumni Center, began its existence in 1908 as a richly ornamented residence hall and commons area.

1925

Chompers keeps the crowds cheering — the gator mascot was first used in Allegheny’s Alligator magazine in 1925.

1961

Allegany College of Maryland, the community's college in Allegany County and serving Western Maryland and the surrounding region, was founded in 1961.

1962

Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees.

1984

At least one Allegheny team has won an NCAC championship every year since it began in 1984

1996

In fall 1996, with the College's role in the region continuing to expand, the College was renamed Allegany College of Maryland to reflect changes in its mission.

1997

A complete athletic facility comparable to the best among colleges Allegheny’s size, the David V. Wise Sport & Fitness Center was opened in the 1997 volleyball season.

2001

2006

Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006.

2015

In 2015, Allegheny will celebrate its 200-year history and the extraordinary futures of the graduating Bicentennial Class of 2015.

2020

Allegheny is poised to achieve climate neutrality in 2020 after two decades of effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through retrofits, LEED-certified construction and renovations, operational and behavior changes, and the installation and purchase of renewable energy.
