America's SBDC company history timeline

1977

In 1977, the University of Southern Maine (USM) was among eight pilot sites funded by the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) to test the concept of leveraging federal, state and higher education resources to assist entrepreneurs and spur economic growth.

1979

In a collaborative effort with key congressional leaders, the Association of Small Business Development Centers was born in 1979.

1980

Beginning in 1980, small businesses nationwide could access the services provided by the SBA’s Small Business Development Centers.

1981

Established in 1981, America’s SBDC Iowa (SBDC) provides no cost, confidential, customized, professional business advice in all 99 Iowa counties to entrepreneurs and existing businesses.

Our programs and activities have contributed significantly to economic growth in Iowa since our inception in 1981.
