Can an optometrist become an ophthalmologist?
Yes, an optometrist can become an ophthalmologist, however, it requires the optometrist to get additional education and training to do so. Optometrists are technically not considered doctors. Aspiring optometrists also must pass the Optometry Admission Test (OAT). This is a computerized exam that covers:

After passing the OAT exam aspiring optometrists then must get accepted to a four-year Doctor of Optometry (OD) program. Coursework in these programs includes:

After they complete medical school they must then complete an ophthalmology medical residency program. These programs generally last three to four years and focus on gaining experience and training in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders and diseases, as well as having a strong focus on performing surgeries on the eyes.
