How do vacation hours work?
Vacation hours, which are often referred to as PTO but may not always be the same thing, are paid hours that are given by a company to its employees so they can take time off to travel or see family and friends.
Vacation time is often accrued throughout the year in different formations. There is no set rate or time for earning vacation time. It is entirely dependent on the company that you work for. Most companies often handle the accrual of vacation time based on the time that an employee spends at a company. More senior employees accrue vacation time faster than newer employees as a way to incentivize talent to stay at a company.
Employees can accrue their vacation time on an hourly, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or per pay-period basis. There are even companies that offer vacation time annually, and employees receive all their vacation time at the beginning of the year so they can use it throughout. There are also businesses that offer unlimited vacation time, which allows for even more flexibility.
