How hard is it to become a podiatrist?
Becoming a podiatrist is quite challenging as it requires a significant amount of education and training. The difficult aspects of becoming a podiatrist include the extensive educational requirements and the rigorous clinical training involved.
Firstly, a Bachelor's degree, typically in a science-related field, is required. This usually takes four years of full-time study. During this time, students must also prepare for and take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
After successfully completing undergraduate studies and passing the MCAT, aspiring podiatrists must then attend a college of podiatric medicine. This is another four years of study where they will earn a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree.
Once the DPM degree has been earned, podiatrists must then complete a three-year hospital residency program. This hands-on training provides them with practical experience in the field.
In addition to these educational requirements, licensure is also necessary which involves passing exams. Furthermore, many podiatrists choose to become board-certified by undergoing further examinations and meeting other criteria set by specific boards such as the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery or the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.
