How hard is it to become a travel nurse?

By Justin Parker - Jun. 13, 2023

It can be somewhat difficult to become a travel nurse, as there are many challenging steps along the way.

  • Education. You must first become a registered nurse. To do this, you have to get either an associate's or bachelor's degree in nursing. Then you have to pass the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). This is a relatively hard exam that tests you on your nursing knowledge and practical applications.
  • More education, clinical experience, and training. Once you have done this, you can then move on to gaining clinical experience as a registered nurse.

If you have only received your associate's degree at this point, you will need to work towards obtaining your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), while simultaneously getting clinical experience.

  • Licensing. This is one of the tricky aspects of becoming a travel nurse because travel nurses must obtain licensure in every state in which they plan on practicing. If you plan on being a travel nurse in one state alone, this step does not apply to you. However, if you want the ability to be a travel nurse in several different states, you must obtain licensure from each of those states.
