How long does it take to get a private pilot license?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Jun. 12, 2023

It can take anywhere from two to six months, on average, to get a private pilot license. To get a private pilot license, you must log at least 35 hours of flying hours as well as additional flight training. Although 35 hours is the minimum requirement, most people who obtain private pilot certifications log around 50 flying hours before certification.

An aspiring pilot may choose to pursue a bachelor's degree in professional flight. Typically, this takes around four years to complete. In this setting, you receive all the necessary training to become a pilot, but you also are required to take additional courses such as Math or English. This gives you a broader degree once completed and prepares you for a private license.
