How long does it take to get an electrician's license?

By Justin Parker - Apr. 25, 2023

It can take up to four or five years to get an electrician's license. The length of time it takes to obtain an electrician's license varies depending on what state you are in. This is because each state has its own individual set of requirements. This might also come down to the county you live in as well.

In general, getting an electrician's license requires a combination of the following elements:

  • Education

  • On-the-job electrician training

  • Passing an exam for licensure

In certain states, it might take a few years to obtain your electrician's license, while in others it can take up to four to five years. This is due to the fact that some states require you to go through an apprenticeship program.

Apprenticeship programs typically last between four and five years, and once completed you are qualified to apply for a license and then must pass an exam in order to obtain it.
