This question is about Pennsylvania.
A 17-year-old in Pennsylvania can work a maximum of 28 hours per week during a regular school week. A 17-year-year-old who is no longer in school, either due to withdrawing or graduating, does not have to comply with these restrictions. These restrictions are subject to change during school breaks like summer vacation.
If you are a minor in high school in Pennsylvania, then you can work up to eight hours a day but never before 6:00 a.m. or after midnight. During a school vacation period, 17-year-olds may work a 10-hour day. They may also work until 1:00 a.m. but not before 6:00 a.m.
A 17-year-old in Pennsylvania who is on break from school may not work more than 48 hours in a single week, and the minor has to agree before working more than 44 in a single week. The minor may reject any request to work more than 44 hours in a single week, without retaliation by the employer.
A 17-year-old student working as a counselor, counselor-in-training, or junior counselor during a school vacation period may be expected to live on-site during that time. In this case, all minors shall receive 24 consecutive hours of rest every seven days.
Minors also require work permits to work in Pennsylvania. A 17-year-old who has dropped out of school should request a letter indicating this status from their home school district. This letter, along with a valid work permit, will indicate to the employer that they are exempt from restrictions concerning work hours.
