How many hours can a minor work in Alaska?
The number of hours that a minor can work in Alaska depends on the age of the minor and the nature of the job. All minors between the ages of 14 and 16 years old must have a work permit on file to work in Alaska. While minors 17 years of age are required to have an approved work permit if the employer has a restaurant designation and is licensed to sell alcohol.
All minors under the age of 18 years old who work six consecutive hours are entitled to a 30-minute break during the work day. In Alaska, the labor law dictates that minors are prohibited from working more than 10 hours a day or 40 hours a week. Additionally, minors under 16 years old may only work three hours a day and 18 hours a week when school is in session.
Minors in Alaska under the age of 14 years old may only work the following occupations:
Newspaper sales and delivery.
Baby-sitting, handiwork, and domestic employment in or about private homes.
The entertainment industry, with an approved work permit from the Alaska Wage and Hour Administration.
In Alaska, minors between the ages of 14 and 15 may work up to eight hours on a non-school day, no more than 40 hours per week. During school, their hours are limited to a total of nine hours of school attendance plus employment during any one day. Work must be performed only between the hours of 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. and total hours worked will be limited to 23 in any week.
Minors under the age of 16 years old are restricted from working in a variety of industries and job duties including any job that involves mining or manufacturing, the use of power-driven machinery, in engine rooms, using power-driven food slicers, and in warehouses and loading docks. Only minors 16 years or older are allowed to sell alcohol, but they must have a work permit with the state before their first day.
