This question is about Pennsylvania.
In Pennsylvania, a minor can work up to 18 hours a week. In Pennsylvania, a minor with work-hour restrictions is defined as someone under 16 years old. 16-year-olds do have work restrictions, but they are much lighter.
For workers under 16 in Pennsylvania, you cannot work more than 3 hours a day on a school day. You also cannot work more than 8 hours a day when school is not in session, and the total work hours cannot be over 18 hours for a given week.
When school is not in session, a minor under 16 can work up to 40 hours in one week. If they are in summer school, that becomes limited to 28 hours per week. There are limits to working hours for minors under 16. They cannot work before 7 AM or after 7 PM. June 1st through Labor Day, they can work until 9 PM.
Minors who are 16 and 17 can work between the hours of 6 AM and Midnight in Pennsylvania. During school, they can work up to 28 hours per week. During summer vacation, they can work up to 19 hours a day until 1 AM. They can also work up to 48 hours weekly.
It is important to note that Federal law states that minors cannot work after 7 PM when school is in session and 9 PM when school is not. They also cannot work before 7 AM at any time.
Federal law also defines a minor as someone under 18 years old, so while Pennsylvania has fewer restrictions for working minors, federal law still has restrictions in place.
