How many hours can you legally work in a day?
There is no federal limit to how many hours you can work in a day. This means that technically, you can work as many hours as possible during a single day There are federal regulations that do state that if you work more than 40 hours a week, you do need to be paid overtime.
While there is no specific set hour limit for how many hours someone can work in a day, there are rules for required breaks if you are working at a single place. For every six hours worked, workers are entitled to a 30-minute break.
Also, although there is no set rule for work hours, in general, most shifts are between 8 and 12 hours for full-time workers. There are positions, such as residents at hospitals, where people can work for over 24 hours straight, but this is not common and is not recommended by many health professionals.
