How many hours does an employee have to work to be eligible for health insurance?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Feb. 20, 2023

The IRS and the Affordable Care Act define anyone working 30 hours or more a week or 130 hours or more a month as a full-time employee, and full-time employees are eligible for health insurance benefits.

However, this only applies to companies that are classified as Applicable Large Employers (ALE) by the IRS. If you work for a small company with less than 40 employees, you may not be under ALE and may have different standards.

Even with the various discrepancies between companies, the average full-time employee, regardless of the size of their company, does receive some benefits such as health insurance or retirement options.
