How to become SHRM certified?
You can become SHRM certified by meeting test requirements and then applying for and passing the exam. Obtaining an SHRM certification can help to step up your human resources career. It also adds credibility to your resume and can be extremely beneficial if you are looking to move positions or companies, so it is a worthwhile thing to do.
The first step to becoming SHRM certified is meeting the test requirements. To apply for the exam, you must complete at least 1000 hours of human resource work in the calendar year preceding your test. It can be full-time work or part-time work, it must just be 1000 hours in that single year.
Along with those hour requirements, you must also have met experience criteria. You should either have at least three to four years of experience if you don't have a bachelor's degree. With a bachelor's degree, you need only one to two years of experience. If you have a graduate degree, you need either one year of experience or a current HR position to take the exam.
Once you meet these requirements, you may apply for the exam. The application just ensures that you meet the requirements and are prepared to take the exam. After you submit your application, you should receive an authorization letter. With that authorization, you can then schedule your exam.
You may choose to purchase study tools for the exam, such as books and other study aids. These can prepare you for the 160-question exam. It should take four hours to complete and is divided into two sections, which are stand-alone knowledge questions and situational judgment questions.
Once you finish the exam, you wait for your results, and if you pass, you are SHRM certified. If not, you can retake the exam. You can retake the exam as many times as you'd like; there is no limit.
After passing the exam, your certification is valid for three years. During this time, you need to complete at least 60 professional credits. When those three years are up, you simply submit your hours online through the certification portal and can then be recertified. If you did not meet the credit requirement, you may choose to retake the exam to recertify.
