How to get a barber license

To get a barber license, you need to first complete a barber school program. These take as few as six months and teach you the important information for being a successful barber. Unlike a cosmetology program, barber programs focus solely on hair-cutting techniques and not on other beauty and skin treatments and are typically geared toward men's haircuts.

After completing the program, you must pass the licensing requirements in whichever state in which you plan on practicing. Most states include an exam to meet their requirements, but some simply require completing a barber school program. After licensing, you may legally begin working as a barber.

Typically, you need to renew your barber's license every two years. Generally, you need to simply go in and take a test to renew your license. The exact requirements vary from state to state, so your exact state may be different.
