How to refuse a drug test at work

By Roger Raber - Jun. 12, 2023

Refusing a drug test at work is the equivalent of admitting to the presence of one or more of the substances for which you are being tested.

Employers are only able to request a drug test from current employees or those for whom they have recently offered employment. As an employee, you are required to comply with established company policy regarding drug testing. The most popular types of drug testing are urine and hair follicle testing. Both of these methods of testing are typically done in person and are difficult to avoid.

It is possible, in some instances, for someone to avoid a hair follicle test based on religious convictions. It may also be possible to excuse yourself from a urine test if you can provide a doctor's note establishing why this type of testing is inappropriate for you medically. The employer, however, can request that you simply take a different type of drug test.
