Is it hard to be a medical technologist?

By Matthew Zane - May. 10, 2023

Yes, it is hard to be a medical technologist. To become a medical technologist requires a 4-year degree and depends on passing a state licensing exam (depending on the state).

Many medical technologists obtain a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory technician (MLT). In contrast, others earn a bachelor's degree in a similar area such as biology, chemistry, or mathematics.

A bachelor's degree in medical laboratory technology often includes the following coursework to prepare these professionals for the workplace: physiology and anatomy, immunology, biology and microbiology, chemistry, mathematics & statistics, and laboratory technology and management.

In addition to possessing the appropriate degree, most employers require medical technologists to hold a valid certification from the American Medical Technologists (AMT) organization. Certification assures employers of your competence and validity to practice.

A medical technologist can also obtain certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). This certificate proves that a technologist is sufficient in the field. An individual may add to their initials the name of the certificate, for example, "MLS (ASCP)." Both certifications require students to prepare for and pass a knowledge exam.

In addition to certification, many states require all laboratory professionals to have a license. The requirements for licensure vary by state. However, the most basic include studying for, paying for, and taking an exam. You may also be required to renew your certification every year.
