This question is about sonographer education.
Yes, sonography school is harder than nursing school because it requires more clinical hours, is more difficult to be accepted into, and has more testing to be completed before graduation. While both programs are difficult, and nursing may even have harder concepts covered, these factors make completing sonography school more difficult.
There are over 2,600 nursing programs in the United States, while there are only around 200 sonography programs. These sonography programs also have significantly lower acceptance rates. This means that those seeking sonography schools may have a harder time finding one than nursing.
While the required clinical hours for nurses varies from state to state, it is generally around 500 hours. Sonography students must complete on average a total of 960 clinical hours, which is almost double that of nursing which means that the program can take a longer time and more effort to complete.
Nursing degrees are completed after finishing the final exam. For sonographers, they must complete 4 separate final exams as well as complete 3 separate credentials which cover adult, pediatric, and fetal sonography. The failure rate of these exams is often around 50 percent, so not only are there a lot of them, but they are also extremely difficult.
