What are the pros and cons of being a school counselor?

Pros:

• Flexible work hours. School counselors can often work part-time or full-time, depending on their availability and needs. This can be great for someone who needs some flexibility in their work.

• Rewarding work. As a school counselor, you can impact and help children. You can help them work through their daily challenges and improve. This can be extremely rewarding, especially if you enjoy working with kids.

Cons:

• Emotionally draining. Helping children work through their issues is extremely rewarding but can also be emotionally draining. You also have to be open to students who are often angry or disrespectful.

• Educational requirements. Most school counselors hold at least master's degrees, and many need additional certifications, which require lots of time, commitment, and money to finish. There are also licensing requirements that can be difficult to obtain.
