What are the second shift work hours?

By Justin Parker - Mar. 13, 2023

Second shift work hours refer to a work schedule that usually happens outside of the traditional work day (9 am to 5 pm). Second-shift work hours can vary depending on the specific employer and industry. But in general, they refer to a work schedule that commences during the late afternoon or early evening and then ends late at night.

There can be many different configurations of a second shift. For example, one might start in the late afternoon around 3 or 4 pm and then end somewhere between 11 pm and midnight. While another might begin later in the evening around 5 or 6 pm (or even later) and then end sometime in the early morning hours, like between 12 am to 5 am.

Second-shift work hours are very common in the following industries:

  • Healthcare

  • Hospitality

  • Manufacturing

  • Transportation

These industries need around-the-clock or 24-hour operations. Job positions that might have second-shift work hours include:

  • Nurses

  • Hotel staff (front desk, cleaning, etc.)

  • Factory workers

  • Truck drivers

While these are not the only types of positions and industries you can find second work hours, they are the most common in these roles and areas.
