What degree do you need to be a trauma nurse?

By Roger Raber - Feb. 20, 2023

You need a minimum of an associate's degree in nursing to work as a trauma nurse. While an ADN is the minimum educational requirement, most employers prefer candidates with additional education.

Because trauma nurses work in emergency settings and must make critical decisions quickly, candidates must come to the profession as prepared as possible.

Although an associate's degree is the minimum requirement, most trauma nurses hold a bachelor's of science in nursing. This four-year degree provides candidates with additional training and exposure to specialized areas of nursing.

In addition to a formal education degree, many employers prefer licensed and certified candidates. Every trauma nurse candidate must pass the NCLEX licensure exam.

It is a good idea to research the pass rate of those exiting your nursing school program before enrollment. Additionally, the Board of Emergency Nursing offers TCRN certification focusing specifically on trauma nursing.
