What disqualifies you from being a cop?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Mar. 13, 2023

Felony convictions, past or current drug use, and dishonorable discharge from military service can disqualify you from being a cop. Many serious disqualifiers can prevent you from taking a job as a cop. To uncover these disqualifiers, all candidates must complete a police background check.

Serious disqualifications uncovered during background checks include serious misdemeanors, bad credit history, history of domestic violence, unreported past crimes, unclean driver's license, past or current gang affiliations, poor employment record, or any false information given on the application.

If you have serious disqualifiers, you are most likely automatically disqualified from becoming a police officer. Of course, there may be exceptions, so it never hurts to contact your local police academy to confirm any specific questions.
