This question is about what an orthodontist does.

What does a typical day look like for an orthodontist?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Apr. 2, 2023

While every day is slightly different for an orthodontist, there are many tasks that an orthodontist completes daily, like setting agendas with their teams, seeing patients, and completing paperwork.

The first thing an orthodontist does occurs before any patient has entered the clinic. Generally, orthodontists start the day by discussing the daily agenda with team members.

This includes hygienists, other orthodontists, and administrators. This helps everyone to be organized and ready. You also make sure the clinic is to start the day.

Then, until lunch, your day consists of seeing patients. This can include doing things such as completing consultations, regular checkups, and putting on braces and Invisalign.

These visits can include things such as x-rays or several tests and photographs. When orthodontists are not with patients, they can review these exams, tests, and x-rays.

At some point, orthodontists take a break for lunch and then continue treating patients after that. One huge part of the day in the life of an orthodontist is educating their patients.

For braces to be successful, orthodontists need to explain how their patients can best take care of these things. Even patients without braces can receive advice for many different issues.

There is a lot of paperwork that goes into being an orthodontist. All appointments should be documented, so for every patient seen each day, the orthodontist has paperwork to complete. This can be done throughout the day or any time that there is time available.

Once the last patient leaves, orthodontists typically finish their day by completing those important notes from the patients seen that day. Then, issues may need to be discussed with other team members. Afterward, the clinic must be tidied and locked before the orthodontist heads home.

Most orthodontists work around 40 hours a week, which can be either Monday thru Friday or Monday thru Thursday, with longer hours. Typically, an orthodontist begins their day somewhere around 8 or 9 am.
