This question is about what a surgeon does.

What hours do surgeons work?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Mar. 13, 2023

Typically, surgeons work around 40 hours a week. Because hospitals must have options for surgery available 24/7, most surgeons do shift work. These shifts can vary from 6 to 12 hours, depending on the hospital and the doctor's availability.

Most surgeons work 3 to 5 days a week, depending on how long their shifts are. The hours vary greatly from day to night and any combination. Typically, surgeons try to "group" their shifts, so they work only nights, some weeks, or only days, which makes being well-rested easier for the doctors.

Along with their standard working hours, surgeons often need to be on call for certain hours. The frequency of this depends on hospitals and their needs. On-call hours mean that a surgeon is not at the hospital but needs to be close and available should a need for them arise.
