What is a fixed interval schedule?

A fixed interval schedule is a schedule of reinforcement where behaviors are rewarded after set periods.The interval of time between each reward is set, hence the term "fixed". There are various pros and cons to this type of reward system.

Often, a downfall of this system is that people tend to wait until the time of reinforcement is near before they begin correcting their behavior. Of course, this means that tasks are still completed, but it can lead to a decrease in motivation. After rewards are given, there is often a decrease in correct behavior as the next reward is far off.
