What is a hawker job?
A hawker job is a type of employment in which a person sells products or services directly in public places such as streets, markets, and parks. Hawkers may also sell their goods or services door-to-door or solicit customers who are outside of these public places.
A hawker is a person who sells goods from door to door, or from a market stall. Historically, this was a popular profession among immigrants and people who were uneducated or had limited skills. The name "hawker" comes from the Old English word "hawker," which means peddler or trader.
The traveling salesman's used to be a fixture throughout the 1800 and early 1900s until the rise of the department store. The play Death of a Salesman does a great job of depicting the rise and fall of the hawker.
Hawker jobs are occupations which involve selling goods door to door, on the street, or at a fixed location such as a market stall. Examples of more modern-day hawkers include street food vendors, cold call solicitors, door-to-door vacuum cleaner salespeople, flea market vendors, holiday decorations salespeople, and direct sales representatives.
