What is flex time at work?
Flex time is an arrangement made between employer and employee that allows for the flexibility of starting times during the work week. Employees typically work the same number of hours but can start earlier or later than those on a traditional work schedule.
The primary benefit of flex time is that employees can accomplish their work responsibilities while accommodating their out-of-work needs. Parents with younger children or those caring for an elderly parent can attend to their responsibilities by being available to attend appointments or provide child care.
Some examples of flex time may be scheduled as a regular part of an employee's work week, while others are on an as-needed basis. As life situations change for employees, flex time may make a difference if an employee stays with a company or chooses to leave because of schedule restrictions.
While flex time provides employees with the ability to tailor their schedules to fit their personal needs, it is not the best solution for all workplaces. Meetings and employee collaboration become more difficult when employees are on different schedules. Deadlines may require that an employee submit work remotely because of the schedule flexibility that they have chosen.
