What is risk retention?

By Justin Parker - Apr. 25, 2023

Risk retention is a facet of a risk management strategy that consists of an organizational or individual choice to accept and go through the financial results that are tied to certain kinds of risks, instead of transferring these risks to a third-party, such as an insurance company.

Simply put, risk retention means that a company assumes the risk of a certain financial investment, transaction, or other activity through the use of its own funding or internal insurance for any potential losses that might be accrued.

Companies often take on risk retention in the hope that it will reduce costs in the long run. However, this can also be a gamble depending on the specific scenario and the amount of risk within it.
