The job title for someone who does invoicing varies and includes billing specialists, invoicing specialists, billing clerks, or accounts receivable. A company deals with two types of invoices: PO-based and non-PO-based invoices. Both of which are usually handled by the accounts receivable.
Depending on the size of the company, they may have several billing specialists that handle either PO or non-PO invoices. PO-based are invoices associated with a company's internal request or purchase order. While non-PO-based invoices do not have an associated request. The accounts payable clerk reviews and processes the invoices.
An accounts receivable or billing clerk may also be responsible for answering billing questions from customers, department managers, and employees. Someone who does invoicing must also stay up-to-date on the company's billing schedule and requested lead times. In some cases, it's important to also understand sales and use tax laws.
