What should I study to become a pediatric nurse?
To become a pediatric nurse, you should study for a nursing degree and pass a licensing exam. A pediatric nursing position requires that candidates also have a minimum amount of experience in the nursing field.
Nursing coursework is similar regardless of the specialized area that a nurse hopes to work in. Courses range from biology and psychology to human development. These courses are required for all nursing candidates.
Aspiring pediatric nurses begin their nursing education by earning an associate's or bachelor's degree in nursing. Those earning an associate's degree in nursing, or ADN, must also pass the NCLEX-RN exam. Candidates earning a bachelor's degree in nursing or BSN must also pass the NCLEX-RN exam.
Once the licensure exam is passed, pediatric nurses should gain employment as an RN or LPN. Roles in pediatric nursing typically require a one to three-month training period. Certified pediatric nurses must pass an exam and complete 1,800 hours of clinical experience in pediatrics in 24 months.
