What should I study to become a zoologist?

By Roger Raber - Jun. 13, 2023

You should study animal science and zoology to become a zoologist. In addition to zoology, there are a number of other bachelor's degrees that may help obtain work as an entry-level zoologist.

Ecology is a major field of study appropriate for someone in the field of zoology. A four-year ecology degree will expose candidates to principles related to entomology, horticulture, and animal science. Ecology majors focus on areas such as animal behavior and marine biology/ecology to better prepare for work in zoology.

A degree in general biology encompasses many of the same areas as does a zoology degree. Marine biology, zoology, and animal behavior are common areas of focus in a general biology curriculum.

There are a number of fields that can provide you with the background necessary to gain entry into the field of zoology. While nearly 70% of zoologists have a bachelor's degree, only 14% of those degrees are in zoology. With only 38 colleges in the country offering a four-year degree in zoology, this is not particularly surprising.
