What to do when your boss disrespects you.

By Roger Raber - Apr. 25, 2023

There are several items to consider when deciding how to deal with a disrespectful boss. Employees should consider the type of disrespect they are experiencing and how they intend to address the behavior.

Disrespect in the workplace can show up in a variety of different forms. Employees should consider the type of behavior they are experiencing before deciding upon an action in response.

If a boss, manager, or team leader is showing disrespect through the use of profanity or intimidation, an employee can choose to first address this individual about their behavior. It is advised that this conversation occurs either in the presence of another employee or via email so that there is some record of it taking place.

This type of workplace disrespect is typically a violation of office or company policy. The HR department should be involved if there is no positive outcome from an employee's confrontation with a disrespectful boss.

Other types of poor employee treatment do not reach such aggressive levels, and your reaction to these tactics may be very different.

We will work with many supervisors throughout our careers, and inevitably, we may not see eye to eye with all of them. If your boss or supervisor's behavior manifests as being ignored or being called out for a mistake in front of the rest of the department or team, you may consider options that do not involve confrontation.

You may ignore the behavior, keep your head down, and keep working at a high level. You can also acknowledge the comments made in the presence of others as constructive and use them to make improvements.
