Who invented work?

By - May. 17, 2023

Work has been a part of human existence for thousands of years, from hunting and gathering to farming and manufacturing. However, what we consider the modern work landscape emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries as a result of the Industrial Revolution.

The nature of work has evolved significantly over time, with new technologies and social systems changing the nature of work. New manufacturing techniques were developed during the Industrial Revolution that allowed for the mass production of goods in factories. This led to a shift away from agriculture and towards manufacturing as the primary driver of the economy.

The Industrial Revolution also led to the growth of cities and urbanization, as people moved from rural areas to work in factories. This created a new class of industrial workers who were often paid low wages and had little job security or benefits. These workers typically worked long hours in factories, performing repetitive tasks in often dangerous and unsanitary conditions.

Over time, working conditions would greatly improve as workers unionized and demanded safer working conditions. Frederick Tylyer in 1881, for example, did the first systematic study of early factory environments, which were chaotic and unproductive. From his observations, Fresdick wrote The Principles of Scientific Management which is basically the modern corporate structure that is still used today.

Henry Ford was another major player in shaping the modern workplace landscape with his creation of the first assembly line, which cut production time in half. In 1926, Ford popularized the 40-hour work week after he discovered through his research that working more yielded only a small increase in productivity that lasted a short period of time. Prior to this, workers were sometimes expected to work as much as 100 hours a week, which led to a lot of accidents and poor-quality workmanship.

The Industrial Revolution had a significant impact on the modern work landscape, with the advent of new manufacturing technologies leading to the rise of factories and mass production. This marked a significant shift in the way work was organized and managed, laying the foundation for many of the structures and practices that we still see in the modern work landscape today.
