1978

As such, the facility took on the country's best engineers and managers, including Xie Qihua, who joined the company in 1978 and later emerged as its chairwoman.

Construction on the new site, which later boasted a total output of 20 million tons, began in 1978.

1979

By 1979, the country's total output topped 34 million tons.

1988

1988: Baoshan plant begins production.

1989

1989: The company becomes the major steel supplier to Shanghai Automotive Industry Group.

1993

1993: Change of name to Baoshan Iron & Steel (Group) Corporation.

1994

Leading this effort was Xie Qihua, who was named the company's general manager in 1994.

1996

1996: A domestic and international marketing arm, Baosteel Group International Trade Corporation, is incorporated.

1998

Baoshan changed its name to Baosteel Iron & Steel Corporation at the beginning of 1998, in preparation for its proposed merger with Shanghai Metallurgical Group Corporation.

2001

In 2001, for example, the company entered a union with Shougang Group and Wuhan Iron and Steel Group Corporation.

2005

2007

2007: Hangang & Baosteel sign agreement to set up HanBao Steel.

2010

Into the mid-decade, Baosteel announced an ambitious new growth target--the doubling of its production capacity in order to claim the position as the world's top steel producer by 2010.

2012

2012: Australian venture with Fortescue in lower-grade iron ores.

2012: Government go-ahead given for $11bn Guangdong project.

2013

2013: Baosteel signs coking coal supply agreement with Russia's Mechel.

2014

2014: Baosteel takes control of Aquila Resources (ore and coal).

2015

2015: Zhanjiang No 1 blast furnace which was ignited on 25-Sep-15 has an annual capacity of 4.1 million metric tons of melted iron.

2016

In 2016, Baosteel merged with Wuhan Iron & Steel, and the business was renamed as the China Baowu Iron & Steel Group.
