Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration company history timeline

1967

In March 1967 Judge Jones reached an impasse with the Central Brooklyn Coordinating Council.

In December 1967 Kennedy brought in John Doar to be the new executive director of the D & S board.

The supermarket, the theater, the gallery and all the rest are part of the wide-ranging approach that the Restoration Corporation has taken to improving the neighborhood since the organization was founded in 1967.

1968

In 1968 the BSRC purchased the abandoned milk-bottling plant on Fulton street for rehabilitation.

1971

In 1971, the BSRC looked to stimulate the region's economy through employment, education, and healthcare programming.

1972

In 1979, Pathmark opened the first supermarket in Bedford-Stuyvesant in the plaza. Its restoration was completed in 1972 and it became the new corporate headquarters for the BSRC, entitled Restoration Plaza.

1973

In 1973, BSRC purchased the Hunterfly Road houses in Weeksville.

1979

In 1979, Pathmark opened the first supermarket in Bedford-Stuyvesant in the plaza.

1988

Despite several setbacks caused by federal budget cuts in the Reagan administration, by 1988 Roderick Mitchell, president of the BSRC, expanded its funding base and continued to strengthen ties with the community.

2009

In March 2009, Mayor Bloomberg approved the creation of the Bedford Stuyvesant Gateway Business Improvement District in order to strengthen economic development by providing more retail options, upgrading storefront appearance, and implementing street cleanup.12

2010

As of 2010, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation had constructed or rehabilitated 2200 housing units in the neighborhood, provided mortgage financing to nearly 1500 homeowners, brought $375 million in investments to the community, and created over 20,000 jobs.
