In 1998, two officers died stopping a shooter who had entered the Capitol.
The building was locked down after a man with a gun entered in 1998 and opened fire.
2000: Law enforcement responsibilities for the State Fair Park in West Allis were transferred to the Capitol Police and the two departments merged as one.
In 2002, the Florida Legislature passed HB 1407, which officially transferred the Capitol Police to FDLE. The sworn law enforcement officers located in the Regional Service Centers were relocated to Tallahassee.
The spring of 2003, marked the 30th anniversary of the Florida Capitol Police.
2008: Deputy Chief Daniel Blackdeer served as Acting Chief from January through September.
2012: Deputy Chief Daniel Blackdeer served as Acting Chief from June through July.
2012-present: David M. Erwin selected as Chief.
2013: “State” was added to our name to officially become the Wisconsin State Capitol Police.
One exception in 2013 involved a controversial car chase in which Capitol Police and Secret Service officers shot a woman 26 times, killing her, after she had driven into a White House checkpoint and then driven toward the Capitol.
In 2015, after a man landed a gyrocopter on the front lawn of the Capitol, Congress brought the chief of the Capitol Police in front of the Committee on House Administration.
At that 2015 hearing, Lofgren suggested that communication between the law enforcement agencies needed to have a protocol so such issues would be avoided.
