Carousel Center company history timeline

1904

At the time the manufacturer was formed, in 1904, the term “toboggan” referred to a wooden roller coaster and, over the next hundred years, the company cranked out 147 roller coasters and 67 carousels, of which 33 still exist.

1909

However, it led a somewhat circuitous route to its current home since the merry-go-round was first built in 1909.

1910

1910: Philadelphia Toboggan Co. (PTC) creates a new, larger, grander carousel (known as PTC#19) for Euclid Beach Park, with 4 rows of horses, 3 inside rows of “jumpers” and an outside row of nearly life size stationary horses and 2 chariots.

WRHS begins restoration of all horses and chariots to the 1910 period.

1969

1969: Euclid Beach Park closes and the Carousel is sold to Palace Playland in Maine.

1985

After Roseland Park closed, the carousel was put up for auction by Norton Auctioneers in its September 16th, 1985 sale.

1992

The completed facility has been performing well with only 20 out of a total of 1700 columns requiring jacking adjustment for settlements by 1992 (Stewart et al.

1994

1994). The soil conditions at the site consisted of a sequence of fill, peat and organic silt, loose sand and silt over soft normally consolidated varved clay.

1994). Geofoam was also used as perimeter fill in the foundation system of an additional 5,600 m2 expansion that was completed in 1994.

1996

Results to date show that lateral pressures against the basement wall are very low. (Negussey and Sun, 1996). Carousel Mall is now planned to expand and become one of the largest shopping malls in the world.

Negussey, D. and Sun M., (1996) "Reducing Lateral Pressure by geofoam (EPS) Substitution." Proceedings of the International Symposium on EPS Construction Method, Tokyo, Japan, 1996.

1996: Palace Playland is sold.

1998

1998: Cleveland Tomorrow places the Carousel under the stewardship of the Western Reserve Historical Society.

2000

In January, 2000, the Carousel Center opened its doors and has become an indispensable community resource to help child abuse survivors, their families, investigative partners for justice, ultimately with the goal to reduce the impact of trauma to child victims.

Bonwit Teller closed in 2000 and is now H&M.

2001

There was once a pharmacy in the commons level called Xpress Place (formerly The Rx Place) that closed in 2001 when the parent company Phar-Mor succumbed to bankruptcy.

2002

In 2002, The Pyramid Companies announced a plan to expand the Carousel Center to be the largest entertainment and shopping destination in the United States, surpassing The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota.

2004

2004: Cleveland Tomorrow gifts the horses and chariots to WRHS, making WRHS the full and sole owners of the Carousel.
