Our story starts in 1920, when Dutch immigrant Charles Schmidt left his job at a brewery in Milwaukee to found Charles Schmidt & Sons Construction.
In 1927, the venture was renamed “Charles Schmidt & Son.”
In the 1940’s the young company opened its office and yard on Richards Street in north Milwaukee.
In 1946, following the end of World War II, C.G. incorporated the company and “Charles Schmidt & Sons Construction” became “CG Schmidt, Inc.” In the post-war boom years, the company began to experience considerable growth, expanding into more diverse and complex projects.
Since our first education project for the Menomonee Falls School District in 1949, we’ve completed hundreds of projects for more than 40 public school districts, from door replacements to $70M+ new schools.
Aside from the deteriorated 1960’s-era interior finishes and design, the exterior had crumbling concrete, peeling paint, overgrown weeds and landscaping, and was largely a blight to a neighborhood that was already teetering on the brink.
Today, our cultural tour begins in the late 1960’s with the Milwaukee County Zoo, a client that was near and dear to Richard Schmidt Sr.’s heart.
The Yahara Center, former home of the Adult Christian Education Foundation, completed in 1976.
While the Center as Charles built it no longer stands, portions of this project can still be seen in the current Madison Country Day School, which purchased the property in 1997.
Yet in spite of the company’s long history in the area, it wasn’t until 2006 that CG Schmidt would make firm their commitment to the Madison market, opening a storefront office in downtown Madison.
In 2008, CG Schmidt’s Madison office completed a $96 million campus expansion at the University of Madison.
The company leadership capitalized on the momentum built by the Union South project to continue to invest in their Madison operations, hiring the first of many Madison-based project managers in 2010.
The Madison office got another such push in 2011 when CG Schmidt co-owner, Eric Schmidt, relocated to Madison from Milwaukee to head day-to-day operations of the team.
In 2014, CG Schmidt assisted the District in passing a $10 million referendum, their first referendum in over 20 years.
The same year, the company announced that after an exhaustive search beginning in 2016, they had located an ideal property to purchase and renovate to serve as a permanent Madison office.
Completed in 2017, the new student center stands as a testament to the drive and commitment of the Madison team.
To accommodate the firm’s substantial growth, in 2018 the office was relocated from the far west side of Madison in the UW Research Park, to the Capitol Square.
In 2019, both Sarah Dunn and Dan Chovanec, the office’s Operations Executive, were named vice presidents of the firm.
