Chemung County company history timeline
“March 29, 1836, Chemung County was organized from Tioga County. It comprised the present territory of the county along with the towns of Catherine, Dix, Montour and Cayuta in Schuyler Countyâ€. On February 7, 1854 the Legislature authorized Horseheads to set up for a township by itself.
The town of Ashland was formed in 1867 from parts of the towns of Chemung, Elmira and Southport.
Founded in 1923, the Chemung County Historical Society is a non-profit educational institution dedicated to the collection, preservation, and presentation of the history of the Chemung Valley region.
First chartered by New York State in 1947, today CCHS operates two cultural repositories, the Chemung Valley History Museum and the Booth Library.
